Starbucks dethrones Coke as Top Facebook brand

Headlines such as the above concern me.

While popularity is surely an indicator of brand strength, the strength of the bonding with the brand and how the popularity was achieved are surely equally important factors to consider.

As this article says, Starbucks ran a free pastry competition thereby getting an additional 200, 000 fans in one week, toppling Coke as the biggest brand on Facebook.

Really?

Coke got 3.5 Mn fans without running any promotion. It let people find out and get drawn to the brand due to its attraction and bonding.

Starbucks through running a series of promotions.

Guess which is the real No1 brand.

The word ‘brand’ has been abused so much by everyone that few now really know what they mean when they refer to something being a No1 brand.

Maybe time for some new terminology.
