Can’t you respond?

The other day a friend of mine posted this Q on Facebook “is confused. Does anybody pick up the phone or return calls any more or is that just outdated?”

Of course that provoked a whole lot of responses from the inane to the philosophical.

Yesterday I was checking my email for a response from a business associate and finding none I wondered if the same phone Q was now spilling over to emails too.

Then I recalled some facts.

At the risk of sounding immodest will drop a few names to make the point.

Emails to

Martin Sorrell will get a response within 24 hours tops. Once I had an email chat with him where he was replying nearly instantly to my mails.

Nandan Nilekani will get a response within 12 hours.

Piyush Pandey (who doesn’t do email) will get a response within 24 hours.

Without question there are a few people more important and busier than the above, but none that I email.

Yet some respond in a week and some not at all.

What’s going on there?

In this day and age where multiple channels of communication are open and easily available, not responding is just not an option.
